Carmakers will have to jump through Apple’s hoops which are costly. Have you noticed even the simplest, iPod player with a connector is expensive? That’s because an Apple co-processor has to be installed on the device and approved by Apple.
At CES, I was told that Apple won’t allow iPod players with connectors for 30 pin and Lightning, companies, must produce either one. Therefore when CarPlay arrives it will be Lightning connector only.
